News and Notes
In Charleston County, South Carolina law enforcement is using a old hoopty pickup truck to run Radar. As far as I know this is a first for Law Enforcement. I have seen Ford Mustangs and Chevy Camero's running radar, however at least they painted in police colors. It makes it hard for someone to realize it is a police vehicle from behind because a lot of motorists can tell the head lights of traditional police cruisers.
This development should be noted wisely! If this is indeed a new trend in traffic control there could be a multitude of consequences. As troubling as this would be for speeders the real problem I see is, if these new chameleon type police cruisers is basically invisible to drivers it opens the possibility of someone impersonating a law enforcement official.
If you are faced with this situation and do not know if it is a real police officer you can do the following:
  1. KEEP your doors locked, if not locked do so immediately
  2. ONLY roll the window down enough to hand your License, Registration and Proof of Insurance.
  3. You can request that the officer show you some ID and badge. Do NOT let the alleged officer to just flash a badge, you can pick one of those up at a flea market.
  4. You can also request a supervisor and they must call one in for you.
Remember, your safety is first priority and real Law Enforcement officials understand this.
